Villa Jovis and Villa Lysis Walking Tour

Villas By the Sea in Capri

The Roman ruins of Villa Jovis and Villa Lysis provide unique and authentic sights of Capri. This Capri private tour is the perfect addition to your stay on the elegant island. Whether this is a day trip to Capri or you have a few days here, you will not want to miss these gorgeous, historic villas by the sea.

We will spend just over 3 hours together as we climb ancient staircases and explore the villas. You will join our tour and meet your guide at Piazzetta Umberto 1 and we will take care of the rest of your journey. Please be sure to bring plenty of water, snacks and sunscreen as it can get very hot during the Mediterranean summer.

A Walk Through Medieval Times

On the way to our first stop you will walk upon layers of history, in the footsteps of Roman emperors, medieval monks, and 19th century artists. This Capri hike will lead you through peaceful streets and bring you a deep sense of serenity.

Villas Jovis

After our walk through Via Matromania, we will arrive at Villa Jovis. As you walk the halls and the ruins of the villa, built in 27 AD by Roman emperors, you will be in awe of how this is only one of the 12 villas built by the same emperors. This is where Roman Emperor Tiberius spent the last 10 years of his life. As you explore, ponder what it might have been like to rule the entire Roman empire from this residence.

The balcony offers a serene view over the gorgeous cliffs and jewel-toned Tyrrhenian Sea. This particular view is one of ancient lore. Age-old legend says that the emperor used to throw servants who did meet his satisfaction over the end of the steep cliff. Another legend states that a fisherman had climbed the cliffs to gift the emperor with a fish. The emperor, unimpressed, threw the fisherman off the cliff. These legends led to the cliff being named “Jump of Tiberius”.

Parco Astarita

Nestled next to the Villa Jovius, is the quaint and picturesque Parco Astarita. Following a path through a stone archway and an ancient stairway to the viewpoint, you will come across a stunning view of the coastline. Sit on a bench and take in the wonders of island life while gazing over the Tyrrhenian sea at the view.

A Hike through Capri

We will depart from the park for a very short but incredibly scenic hike to our next destination: Villa Lysis. For those who would like to opt for a less strenuous experience, there is a paved road available as well.

Villa Lysis

As we finish up our light hike, we will arrive at the Villa Lysis. Villa Lysis is nestled in the gray jagged hill, and is completely surrounded by lush greenery. The exquisite villa was built by the extravagant French aristocratic Jacque Fersen. Fersen decided to dedicate this place to the celebration of love and pain, due to the fact that Fersen lived here with his lover. Upon entrance, you will see a sculpture dedicated to the boy.

As you explore the grounds, you will not want to miss the beautiful balconies that lead to a  picture perfect view of the jewel-toned Mediterranean sea.

Ciao for now

To end the tour, we will head back to the city center and part ways. Although we will part ways, do not let this be the end of your visit to the beautiful island. We suggest checking out the restaurants around the center, maybe grabbing some delectable Capri’s pizza or a limoncello.
